Senators Reed, Kerry, McCain, Obama, Dodd, Kennedy, Congresswoman Norton and others Honor
Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund at Reception

Read the most current coverage of the Congressional Reception in Roll Call, Executive Biz and The Hill

Thursday, May 11 the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund held our 8th Annual Congressional Reception in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol. The event was presented by Morgan Stanley and Freddie Mac, sponsored by Raytheon, Microsoft and Lockheed Martin. It was an unforgettable night for Hoop Dreams honoring the nearly 800 DC students we have helped send to college since 1996 and a wonderful way to celebrate the work that Hoop Dreams does on a local level addressing national issues surrounding education, college access and empowering youth.

The evening was kicked off by longtime HDSF friend and Chair of the event Senator Jack Reed (RI). Senator Ted Kennedy, Senator John Kerry, Senator John McCain, Senator Paul Sarbanes, Senator Barak Obama, Senator Chris Dodd and Senator John Warner also joined Hoop Dreams supporters and made wonderful and inspiring remarks. In addition, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Congressman Tim Ryan, Congressman Kendrick Meek, Congresswoman Lois Capps and the US Deputy Secretary of Education, Raymond Simon spoke. Senator Patty Murray also stopped by.

With McCain, Kerry and Obama, their comments felt like a presidential election kickoff but they were all united in their support of HDSF. Click here for additional photos.

Hoop Dreams honorees who accepted awards last night and made remarks were Ann Friedman, Kathy Etemad Hollinger representing Comcast of the District and Carolynn Mambu from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation. Cozy Bailey of EDS, the founding Hoop Dreams sponsor offered words as well as Aona Jefferson, principle of HD Woodson High School. Some of the many special guests amongst the hundreds in attendance included Tom McMillen, Pat McGettigan, Jim Duffey, Bill Wolfe, Mike Wise from the Washington Post and former Wizard/NBA great Gheorghe Muresan. The night culminated with moving and powerful remarks from two current HDSF students, Shaunice Barnum and Lashella Wade, who will both be the first in their family to attend college this fall.

The Congressional Reception was followed by a great celebration at Lounge 201. A huge special Thank you to Matt Weiss of Lounge 201 and National Distributing Company, Inc. for helping to make that such a wonderful time for the hundreds of HDSF supporters that turned out to cap off a special night!

About Hoop Dreams

The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) was founded in 1996 by Susie Kay, who taught American Government at H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, DC for over a decade. The organization began as a one-day event, a 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament staged to raise money for academic college scholarships for Kay's students. Since then, still led by Susie Kay, a committed group of dedicated volunteers, supporters and a small staff has worked to grow the effort into a year-round not-for-profit organization committed to expanding the academic and career horizons of Washington, DC public school students.

Since our inception in 1996, The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund has helped send more than 920 DC public high school students to college and move toward a more positive and enriched future with the combination of awarding of over 1,600 academic college scholarships and renewals, totaling more than $3 million coupled with our year long college prep mentoring program, internship - career prep program and SAT prep partnership program with the Princeton Review. These programs and scholarships are combined with our community building efforts, which are all focused on empowering DC students and building bridges across diverse communities. Hoop Dreams has brought together more than 800 DC students and mentors from the local business community through our year long college prep mentoring program; facilitated hundreds of internships; engaged more than 1,000 volunteers in community work; and helped coach more than 400 students through our SAT prep program in partnership with The Princeton Review. We are also very proud to note that many of our Hoop Dreams college graduates have returned to volunteer and mentor with the organization, completing the circle of community service. More than 200 of Hoop Dreams students have now graduated from college. Most of our students are the first in their family to go to college. Hoop Dreams remains deeply committed to uniting the community and building bridges while supporting our local students and their dreams.
