Mentoring

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming involved in the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund College Prep Mentoring Program for 2004-2005.  The mentoring calendar year begins in September and continues throughout the school year.  Currently we are recruiting volunteers to become full time mentors, back up mentors and logistical volunteers.  Please read below for detailed descriptions, the mentoring calendar and volunteer applications.  If you have additional questions, please contact Rachel Cleaver at (202)289-6478 or rcleaver@hoopdreams.org.

Mentoring Program Description

The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund was founded in 1996 by former DCPS teacher Susie Kay who taught at HD Woodson, located East of the Anacostia River for over a decade. She, along with friends and volunteers launched what was intended to be a one-day fundraising charity basketball tournament to galvanize the community on behalf of local students and garner support for students from Woodson and other DC public schools to pursue their dreams of a college education and beyond.

Since 1996, Hoop Dreams has grown into a year-round comprehensive academic scholarship and support program, which works as an independent partner with some of the more resource challenged inner-city DC public high schools. Through a committed network of volunteers and supporters Hoop Dreams provides a core program of college preparation mentoring, internships, and SAT preparation. Since 1996, HDSF has helped send 700 DC students to college. The vast majority of these students are the first in their family to go to college and come from a single parent household.

The aim of the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund College Prep Mentoring Program is to assist selected Washington, DC high school seniors navigate through the college application and financial aid process while building bridges of understanding. To achieve this objective, we pair DC Public High School and Public Charter School students with members of the metropolitan regional business and professional community. Mentors work with students to set goals, explore colleges and universities, and guide them through the college application process.

In short, Hoop Dreams provides resources in order to prepare you for college. Also, HDSF aims to build bridges and relationships between local high school students and members of the professional DC community.

Full Time Mentors

Full time mentors make the greatest commitment to the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund program. Each full time mentor is assigned a student to work with throughout the year. If you wish to apply to become a full time mentor, please look at the calendar above to make sure you are available to attend each month's workshops. Also, each year we receive many applications for full time mentors. We attempt to place as many mentors as possible. It is our goal to select mentors that will best fit the needs of the students in our program.

Back Up Mentors and Logistical Volunteers

On the day of our mentoring workshops, we often need many additional volunteers. Two main roles are back up mentors and logistical volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for either of these roles, you are not required to attend each workshop. A few weeks before each workshop, an email asking for volunteers is sent out. Volunteers than simply sign up if they are available for either of these roles.

Back up mentors work one on one with a student whose mentor had an emergency absence on that particular day. Back up mentors are asked to stay for the entire mentoring workshop and help student complete the exercises of the day.

Logistical volunteers help out with registration, set up and clean up during each workshop. Volunteers are usually not asked to stay for the whole workshop so this is a more flexible time commitment.
